Undefeated Cardinal host 17th-ranked Sun Devils in Pac-10 opener

NCAA Basketball Betting Lines

01/02/2009 - Stanford, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The 17th-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils are set to kick off their Pac-10 schedule tonight against the Stanford Cardinal at Maples Pavilion.

Arizona State has won its last seven games to improve to 11-1 overall. The club was most recently in action on Monday when it cruised past Central Connecticut State in an 84-47 final. The lone loss came against Baylor on a neutral court back in late November, and the Sun Devils have only played one true road game thus far.

As for Stanford, it was one of six Division I teams with an undefeated record as of December 31st, and head coach Johnny Dawkins deserves a ton of credit for the early success of his club. The Cardinal are coming off a 69-55 triumph over Hartford on Tuesday that enabled them to improve to 10-0, and seven of the victories have come at home.

Stanford owns a 37-27 series lead over Arizona State, and the teams split a pair of meetings a year ago.

James Harden is arguably the best backcourt performer in all of college basketball, and the Arizona State sophomore has been tremendous through the first 12 games. He is scoring 23.8 ppg on 57.8 percent shooting from the floor, including 46.2 percent efficiency from three-point range. Far from just a scorer, Harden is ripping down 6.0 rpg to go along with 52 assists and 22 steals. While the dynamic guard is clearly the focus of the ASU offensive attack, he does get some help from his teammates. Jeff Pendergraph provides 12.8 ppg on 65.2 percent shooting from the field, and he is grabbing 7.1 rpg. Ty Abbott adds 11.3 ppg, and Rihards Kuksiks pitches in 10.8 ppg. ASU is generating 75.3 ppg on 50.8 percent shooting from the floor, and the team is limiting its opponents to 58.0 ppg on 39 percent shooting.

Anthony Goods leads Stanford in scoring with 18.4 ppg, but he isn't asked to carry the load alone, as there are a total of four double-digit scorers in the lineup for coach Dawkins. Lawrence Hill provides 13.6 ppg and 6.9 rpg, and Josh Owens checks in with 11.7 ppg. Rounding out the foursome is Landry Fields with his 11.4 ppg. The Cardinal are generating a healthy 79.2 ppg, and they are limiting opponents to 64.0 ppg. Against Hartford on Tuesday, Johnson posted 14 points and eight assists, while Goods scored 13 points. Hill provided 11 points, and Jeremy Green checked in with 10 points off the bench. Stanford played outstanding team defense in the contest, limiting Hartford to 38.0 percent shooting from the field, including 22.7 percent from downtown.

Super Bowl XLIV Odds

Super Bowl XLIII isn't even a week old yet and oddsmakers have already released Super Bowl XLIV odds.

Despite the Pittsburgh Steelers winning Super Bowl 43, the New England Patriots are 8/1 favorites to win Super Bowl 44.

Bet Super Bowl XLIV Future Odds

With their 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII, the Steelers became the latest NFL champion. But believe it or not, oddsmakers from online sports book MySportsbook.com don't have the Steelers the favorites to win Super Bowl XLIV next season.

That honor belongs to the New England Patriots, who are 8/1 favorites to win despite not even qualify for the postseason in 2008. The Pats also have a major decision to make regarding what to do with Matt Cassel, who played well in Tom Brady's (knee surgery) absence last year but is also a free agent this offseason.

Ironically, the Steelers aren't even oddsmakers second choice to win Super Bowl 44, as the Dallas Cowboys are listed right behind the Patriots at 9/1 despite not making the playoffs themselves. Clearly oddsmakers think the public will hop back on the Cowboys' bandwagon considering the immense talent they have and the opening of a brand new stadium.

After Dallas, then comes Pittsburgh at 10/1, but they share those odds with the New York Giants, who won Super Bowl XLII. The Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers round out the top six teams at 12/1, while the Baltimore Ravens (14/1), Tennessee Titans (16/1), Carolina Panthers (18/1) and Philadelphia Eagles (18/1) complete the top 10.

The NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals got no love from oddsmakers as they were established as a 30/1 long shot to win next year's Super Bowl. They share those same odds with the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers – two teams that didn't even qualify for the postseason. Other long shots are the Kansas City Chiefs (100/1), Detroit Lions (100/1), St. Louis Rams (75/1) and Oakland Raiders (75/1).

Two playoff teams from 2007 take center stage on the NFL Network Sunday night in a Week 2 NFL betting match-up when the (0-1) New England Patriots betting head south to Florida for a contest with the (1-0) Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

New England HC Bill Belichick couldn’t care less about the way his team plays in the preseason. With a chance to tie last week’s game with the Baltimore Ravens betting, He elected to go for the two-point conversion and outright victory. The conversion failed, and the Pats ended up falling to the Ravens by a 16-15 final count.

New England rolled off twelve unanswered points to give it a chance at securing the victory, but it never threatened to cover the 3.5-point spread. NFL bettors saw this one coming, as they bet the Ravens down from +6 to +3.5 as the week progressed. QB Tom Brady didn’t take part in the Patriots first preseason clash, but could see action this weekend.

His three replacements all put up embarrassing numbers. They went a combined 17 for 33, and threw three interceptions and no touchdowns. The New England defense was encouraging, as they held the Ravens to 2/12 third down conversions and surrendered just ten first downs. That ‘D’ should be bolstered with the addition of former Bucs and Denver Broncos betting safety John Lynch, who could make his Patriots debut on Sunday against his former mates.

HC Jon Gruden had to be impressed with the way his Bucs played on both sides of the ball in their dominating 17-6 victory over the Miami Dolphins in Week 1’s NFL pre-season betting action. Bucs bettors were quite happy with the effort, as they made a mockery of the fact that they were underdogs in the game.

The logjam at the quarterback position didn’t get any easier to separate for Gruden, as all four of his QBs had positive experiences in the first exhibition of 2008. The four combined to complete 28 of their 40 passes for 204 yards and a touchdown, and that was without starting QB Jeff Garcia in the lineup.

RB Michael Bennett had 19 carries and four receptions, totaling 90 yards and a touchdown. Expect to see more of Bennett, Kenneth Darby, and Earnest Graham, as they all compete for playing time with Warrick Dunn in the backfield this season. Defensively, the Bucs recorded four sacks and held the Fins offense in check all day.

First round draft pick Aqib Talib was impressive in the secondary, recording a tackle and two pass defenses in his debut. Don’t be surprised to see Talib in the starting lineup opposite Ronde Barber for the Bucs in ’08.

The betting trends suggest that NFL bettors should be backing the Bucs in this intra-conference exhibition.

These two teams hooked up last year in Tampa Bay, with the Bucs winning that game 13-10. The Buccaneers have only lost one preseason game at home dating back to the beginning of the ’05 preseason. The Patriots have had a mixed bag of results in their recent exhibitions. They have gone 2-2 ATS and SU each of the last three years.

New England currently sits as modest 1-point favorites in this preseason showdown with the ‘total’ now sitting at 34.5.
